As a dynamic arts executive, artist, and curator she has worked as an advocate for the importance of individual creativity and the work of practitioners in the areas of art, design and new technology in both the US and UK. From 2004 – 2007, she was the Executive Director and CEO of New Media Scotland, the art and technology development organization for Scotland. During her tenure she defined a new mission, strategy and plan for the organization that put the role and support for creative practitioners at the heart of the organization’s initiatives. Prior to that, she was the acting Vice President for Community Arts Services (CAS) for Culture Works (promoted from CAS Associate). She administered the programs and services of the organization including grant making and professional development for artists and arts organizations. She is also a practicing artist and the Co-Director of rootoftwo, a hybrid art and design practice she founded with John Marshall now based in Michigan (www.rootoftwo.com). Since 1998 rootoftwo has been exploring technology as a driver of disciplinary convergence. rootoftwo has exhibited in the US, Europe, Australia and online. Charles also curates exhibitions and urban screenings with other artist-led groups such as Video in the Built Environment (v1b3.com), Fast-uk (Perimeters, Boundaries and Borders) and artcore (Intersculpt:ohio) and is a member of the Upgrade! International network (www.theupgrade.net).
