Detroit, Michigan: The producers of the Creative Cities Summit 2.0 (CCS2) today announced a special panel discussion featuring Richard Florida, author of Rise of the Creative Class, John Howkins, author of The Creative Economy, and Charles Landry, author of The Creative City. The panel will be moderated by Carol Coletta, President of CEOs for Cities and host of the nationally syndicated NPR radio program, Smart City Radio.

“It is only fitting that in Detroit, the home of the Big Three, we have the coming together of the Big ‘Creative” Three, onstage together for the first time” said CCS2 Producer, Peter Kageyama. “Many people have asked over the years what the distinctions were between creative class, creative cities and the creative economy. With the three originators of the concepts, we will have a chance to hear from the sources.”

“Richard, John and I have approached the need for creativity in different ways but we all believe it essential to achieving economic and social progress in the world today,” said Landry. ”I look forward to sharing ideas on how cities can be revitalized to attract creative people and creative businesses that will create a vibrate economy.”

The panel session takes place on Tuesday, October 14th at 4pm, and follows keynotes by each author over the opening two days of the Summit at the Marriott Renaissance Center in downtown Detroit.

The Creative Cities Summit 2.0 is being held in Detroit because, like many industrial cities, it is working to evolve into a high tech, futuristic, entrepreneurial center of excellence that embraces knowledge, talent and creativity. Participants will include architects, designers, urban planners, civic leaders, entrepreneurs, artists, students, educators and community leaders sharing their experiences, projects, successes and failures as they re-imagine and rethink cities.

“Doug is a visionary when it comes to creating sustainable urban neighborhoods,” said Peter Kagayama, Co-Director for the Creative Cities Summit 2.0. “In his book Sustainable Urbanism he addresses traditional urban development along with his concept of “high performance” buildings and infrastructure. This will be an exciting conversation for our attendees.”

According to Farr, “Our sustainable design comes from clients committed to innovation and a shared vision for the promise of our future.” In addition to his work as an architect, author and designer, Farr also chaired the development of the LEED-Neighborhood Development designation program (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). A best-selling author based in Great Britain, Landry is a noted authority on creativity and how cities can shape their futures by paying attention to their cultures.

“Charles Landry is one of the most respected visionaries and voices on creativity and city making,” said Karen Gagnon, co-director of Creative Cities Summit 2.0. “We are thrilled participants in the Creative Cities Summit 2.0 will get to hear and interact with him. His ideas have profoundly impacted the work we are doing with the Michigan Cool Cities initiative and his books have changed the way people the world over are thinking about cities and how they can be ‘creative for the world.’”

The Michigan Cool Cities Initiative is an economic development model that strives to build vibrant, creative, energetic cities that attract urban pioneers and young knowledge workers who are a driving force for economic development and growth. Building and reinvesting in neighborhoods that offer a sense of place is crucial to cities becoming centers of economic growth and opportunity.

In addition to writing and presenting, Landry has helped organizations and cities “transform their thinking so that they look at their potential imaginatively and can plan and act with originality.” He helps ground the latest trends into practical and successful initiatives and transformations. More about Charles Landry can be found at his website http://www.charleslandry.com/.

LANSING, Mich. - Organizers for Creative Cities Summit 2.0, the second International Creative Cities Summit to be held October 13-15 in Detroit, have announced their intention to host an environmentally-friendly conference including keeping track of the conference’s carbon footprint and committing to following best sustainability practices.

“Being thoughtful and proactive stewards of the environment is integral to Creative Cities Summit 2.0’s overall mission,” said Peter Kageyama, Co-Director of Creative Cities Summit 2.0. “As part of our effort we have appointed “Green Guru” Laura Rauwerda of the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) to help us meet this commitment and are collaborating with vendors including the Marriott Renaissance Center to minimize our carbon footprint.”

Kageyama added that organizers are integrating the use of carbon footprint calculators into all aspects of the conference and plan to donate any carbon savings to a worthwhile non-profit organization.

“We are looking forward to hosting a stellar international conference and helping the environment at the same time by passing on our carbon savings to a cause that is in keeping with the creative cities movement and our commitment to help foster sustainable communities,” said Kageyama.

Creative Cities Summit 2.0 is a next-generation look at how communities around the world are integrating innovation, social entrepreneurship, sustainability, arts & culture and business to make vibrant economies.
The summit brings together change agents including architects, designers, urban planners, civic leaders, entrepreneurs, artists, students, educators and community leaders to share their experiences, projects, successes and failures as together we re-imagine our cities.

The Summit will be held in downtown Detroit Oct. 13-15. Summit topics will include: Developing Entrepreneurship & Talent, Creating a Sense of Place, Encouraging Diversity of Thinking and of Being, Establishing Green and Sustainable Communities.

The Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) Cool Cities initiative, part of the MSHDA Urban Revitalization division, is a key organizer for the conference. The initial Creative Cities Summit held in St. Petersburg, Florida in 2004, was one of the first creative economy events in the United States.

LANSING - Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced that Detroit will host the second International Creative Cities Summit in October. This year’s Summit “Creative Cities 2.0″ will provide a next-generation look at how communities are integrating innovation, social entrepreneurship, arts & culture and business to make vibrant economies. The Michigan State Housing Development Authority’s (MSHDA) Cool Cities Team is a key organizer for the event.

“Michigan’s greatest economic successes have always been tied to the creative and productive power of our cities,” Granholm said. “We are looking forward to hosting leading thinkers and practitioners from around the world to discuss the latest in creative community development.”

The Summit will be held October 13-15, with topics to include place making, talent attraction and retention strategies and best practices for economic and social development.

“We are thrilled to bring this event to Michigan, in particular to Detroit, where these ideas are already underway,” said Peter Kageyama of Creative Cities Productions, the producers of the event. “We saw this as an opportunity to use the metaphor of Detroit - the epitome of the American industrial city that is creatively remaking itself in the 21st century.”

The initial Creative Cities Summit held in St. Petersburg, Florida in 2004, was one of the first creative economy events in the United States.

“We want to showcase Michigan, not only to the world, but to ourselves,” said Karen Gagnon, MSHDA’s Cool Cities team leader.

MSHDA is a quasi-state agency that provides financial and technical assistance through public and private partnerships to create and preserve safe and decent affordable housing, engage in community economic development activities, and address homeless issues. MSHDA’s loans and operating expenses are financed through the sale of tax-exempt and taxable bonds and notes to private investors, not from state tax revenues. For more information on MSHDA programs and initiatives, visit the Web site at www.michigan.gov/mshda.
